Thanksgiving Celebration

I'm getting this post up a little late! But at least it was before December.
We had an amazing Thanksgiving with our family this year (like every year). This one was just a little bit more special though. Being home in KC and spending more time with everybody since no one had to travel was such a blessing.
Even Ryan's Grandma stopped by to see the house before she headed on to Blue Springs for Thanksgiving.
Harlan, Georgia May & Ryan
Susan & Ryan slaving away in the kitchen. As usual, Susan brought all her famous dishes that make a meal truly complete. Ryan's turkey was one the tastiest turkey's I can remember having. This year he brined the turkey before hand, and I think it made a difference.
Sean helped trim the turkey and save the juices for the stuffing. Yum...
Everyone at the table except Ryan, Susan and I. It was so hard to get a group picture this year! Boo. Do notice Papa throwing up peace signs though.
Afterward, the group played some rousing games of tennis and other Wii games to work off the calories.
And to work up and appetite for dessert!
The dessert table. This year I was in charge of the pies for the first time! I've never really made a pie before. So I was pretty nervous. Naturally, I had to hit up Pioneer Woman's website for ideas. She actually referred me to other people's recipes that I sifted through. I did find a couple that I thought were worth trying.
This was my first chocolate pie. It turned out pretty good but I wish it wasn't so gooey. As in, I wish it was a little smoother. Anyone know what I'm talking about? It also needed a lot of homemade whipped cream to offset some of the bitter chocolate. I was a little self conscious of this one but everyone seemed to love it. Whew.
This was definitely my favorite pie. Mmmmm... Pumpkin.... It was surprisingly easy to make. It turned out perfectly! I was afraid the middle of the pie might fall inward but it turned out to be level. It tasted great too, not too over powering but just enough flavor. I also found a recipe to make the pie crust's and it wasn't hard to do either. Trust me... if I can do it. You can do it.
Susan brought an assortment of scrumptious cookies to munch on as well.
To top off a wonderful day, my sis-in-laws serenaded us with their gorgeous voices. They always create the most amazing harmonies.
I love my sisters. :)
Thanksgiving was so fun and I can't wait for Christmas. We put up our lights on the outside of the house and are putting the finishing touches on the tree and decorations inside. Pictures to come! Hope you liked the sneek peek inside the house. I'm still trying to get a post together of before and afters. Since that "afters" may take awhile, I'll probably post "before" and "in progress". ;)

Happy Thanksgiving!

HaPpY ThAnKsGiViNg!!!

I just wanted to pop in to wish everyone a wonderful holiday with family & friends.  We will be spending today in our new home with our family.  No, I will not be cooking the entire meal myself.  Geez, I just moved in! :)  I'm lucky to have our parents and my husband (who can cook!) helping out in a big way.  I've been running around trying to get the house livable for guests so I haven't had much time to think about Thanksgiving dinner.  Please forgive me.  Maybe next year I will try and tackle the whole meal!  (Please don't hold me to that last statement.)

In the spirit of Thanksgiving a lot of my blogger friends are listing out what they are most thankful for.  I haven't really done that in the past but I'll give it the ol' college try.  I'm going to list my top 5 from this past year.  I'm not going to list family & friends because we all know I'm super thankful for them!

1)  Moving Back Home!!!   Ok, so I will mention family and friends.  I am so thankful to be close to them again.  It's so weird for me to not have to travel for a holiday and really none of the family has to travel either.  I do miss our good friends back in Texas and Oklahoma though.

2)  Our House-   I'm super thankful that our house in Texas sold and that we found one in Kansas City.  I was worried that we weren't going to be in a house before the holidays.  But our prayers were answered! :)

3)  Finding A Job-  I'm extremely thankful for this.  I'm well aware how hard it is to find one and have several friends that are looking.  The fact that I was able to stay with my company and that there was a job opening in KC is a pure miracle!  (Christmas miracle anyone?)

4)  Adding A Second Vehicle-  We were a one car family for over 3 years, and that was wonderful in many ways.  But now that my husband & I don't work in the same location we needed to break down and get a second one.  Ryan is on the road a lot and there were specific things we were looking for in our next car.  I didn't think we would ever find one that met our needs.  Finally, we did welcome a new vehicle to our family this past summer.  :)

5)  Finding A Church- We never really landed on a church home in Texas so I was anxious to find one here.  There were so many that I wanted to try.  The first one we went to has been where we've been going ever since.  The head pastor was my youth leader when I was young and he is awesome.  Plus, we already have great friends that go there and it's close to our house.  I'm so ready to get involved with the church and our community.  I'm definitely excited for next year.

There are so many other things I could list here that I'm very thankful for.  My pastor just recently talked about being joyful always, unceasing prayer and be thankful in all situations.  I've been thinking a lot about that and how I want to do all those things.  It doesn't matter what situation you are in, there's always something to be thankful for.

Sean = Sad

So you've probably read about Sean (aka Emily's boyfriend) before on here.  I really like him.  :)  Emily & Sean have known each other since at least high school.  They lived in neighboring towns and even went to prom together!  Through the years they've remained friends and this past year realized they had feelings for each other.  It's a match made in heaven.  They seriously are perfect for each other.  I was super excited to move back and get to hang out with the love birds.... BUT now Sean just took a job in Utah!!!  What the heck??
(high school pic)

I mean I'm happy he was offered a great job at an incredible resort, but I really think he should have checked with me first.  ;)  Check out the flipping awesome resort HERE where Sean will be hobnobbing with celebrities.  It's the word on the street.  He will actually be living in Arizona b/c the resort is so close to the border.  On a positive note, I guess I have more excuses to travel to cool places.
Ryan, Emily & cousin Alison at Sean's going away party this past weekend.

Ryan & I realize this also means that Emily will not be far behind him.  So we are savoring these last few days together!

Em, Ali & I

Side note, Ryan & Emily's cousin, Alison, is an incredible cook and photographer (not to mention musician).  You should totally check out her website.  I know you will find some very delectable recipes you will want to try.

Oh Sean, we are going to miss you!  Our  time was so short in Kansas City, but have no fear!  We will be visiting very soon.  KC will not be the same without your tennis matches and painting skills.  We know you will kick booty in your new job.  Go get them tiger!

A Taste

Here's a sneak preview of all the hard work that's been going on these past few weeks.  We were so blessed to have our family and friends come the weekend we moved in and work!  I've been planning to show you guys before and afters as the rooms finish.  That will probably take awhile, but we'll work with it.  I'm pretty burnt out on painting already and we're painting every room in this house!!!  oh man...
The first room we hit was Ryan's office so that he could feel settled.  We are almost done with it.  It just needs a new light fixture, hang up artwork and maybe new window treatments.

Emily's boyfriend, Sean, was a huge help.  It was so sweet of him to want to pitch in.  I like him.  ;)
(At a certain somebody's request, I switched the "painting photo" with a more appropriate depiction of Sean.  WHERE'S THE GUN SHOW?!)

That first weekend we ended up painting three bedrooms and the guest bathroom!!  You will crack up when you see the before pics.

The Ebright men just don't know how to not be working.  Even while the movers were moving us in they were outside raking!!

My mom worked so hard that she ended up having back pain for a week!  This is her getting a much needed message from our friend Elise.  She is such a sweetheart!
Much more to come.  As we speak our driveway is getting redone.  So excited!

Pretty much the story of my life right now is work, unpack and paint, repeat.

Birthday Wrap Up

I know you guys are all waiting on a house update.  Well, the only think to report is there has been a lot of painting and unpacking going on.  I promise to get a post out soon specifically about the house.  :)

On Ryan's actually birthday, my mom joined us for dinner at the famous Stroud's Restaurant.  I had never been and Ryan wanted good home styled cooking.  There's always a wait but it's so worth it.  This restaurant was even featured on Man vs. Food.
Waiting to eat our chicken fried chicken, mash potatoes and gravy, green beans, chicken noodle soup and cinnamon rolls!! mmmmmm

If you are ever in KC this is a must.

After we sufficiently filled our stomachs, we stopped by our good friends, Matt & Kara's, Octoberfest party.  Seeing all our good friends really topped off a great birthday for Ryan.

The next day we traveled to Manhattan, KS for a football game.  Back in the spring I had bought us tickets to the K-State homecoming game for my hubby's b-day.  Since it was the day after I thought it would be a perfect birthday gift.

We had a blast even though our team lost to Oklahoma State. :(  Boo.  Oh well, it was still great to spend some time back in our old college town.

New Name, New Look

You may have noticed a little change around here.  I got the itch again to switch things up.  I wasn't loving the last title and was looking for something a little more catchy that was totally me.  Let's face it, sugar defines me.  Can I get an amen from my IRL (in real life) friends??  I can't go a day with out something sweet and adding sugar makes everything better.  :)  One of my biggest joys/hobbies is baking.  So I thought why not incorporate that into my title.  That my friends, is where the title to this blog came from.  I'm still working on the header but it's been fun trying to create my own designs.  If you are still linked to my page it will redirect you here.  But you can always change your link to my new and improved site  There's no blogspot to have to type out!

Joy is so important in life, and I hope this blog brings you a little of that.

Right now life has been a little hectic.  That is be a big reason why I'm loving reading the book Sabbath: Finding Rest, Renewal, and Delight in Our Busy Lives by Wayne Mueller.  It has been a breath of fresh air to read.  I'm finding myself highlighting almost every page.  I even put a quote from the book in my "about me" section to the right.  The trend of my life seems to be a hectic one and it's so important to remember to rest.  It does a body good.  :)  How I heard about this book is from a lovely community of blog book readers, Bloom.  Check them out and join in on the fun!

Ryan & I will be moving into our long awaited house this weekend!  We are lucky enough to have a team of wonderful family and friends coming to help us paint a few rooms on Saturday before the movers come on Sunday.  Get excited for some pics!  It maybe a few days though...  Remember? I'm trying to slow down a little bit?

To tide you over, I'm leaving you all with a cute/awesome video my sis-in-law, Sally, introduced me to.  Some of you may have already seen this, but it's worth revisiting.  I just love it!

Hope that brings a smile to your face and you all enjoy your weekend! Think of me while I am slaving away unpacking boxes upon boxes.

We are closing...

... on this house today!
Doesn't the fall leaves make it so charming??  I LOVE fall.

We had our final walk through on Monday, and I was able to get some updated photos of the new roof.
I think it turned out so good!  Next up is a new driveway in a week.  I'm so looking forward to having our own place again and putting our touch on things.  Can't wait to show you guys what all we plan to do!  We're moving in this weekend.  Hallelujah!
